Pre-Treatment Instructions

  1. Make sure the hair is long enough — for most people this is 3–4 days of growth (about the length of a grain of rice). This allows the provider to see hair density and coarseness.

  2. Remove any makeup on areas to be treated.

  3. Get as comfortable as possible during the treatment.

  4. Reduce stress as much as possible on the day of your appointment.

  5. Your diet can affect sensitivity. Avoid stimulants like caffeine, chocolate, or sugar the day before and the day of your appointment.

  6. Avoid sun exposure for 48 hours before treatment to prevent blood vessel dilation.

  7. Do not use Retin A, Tazorac, or other retinoids for at least 5 days before treatment. Discontinue Accutane for at least 6 months before electrolysis.

  8. You may be more sensitive during or just before your menstrual cycle, so consider scheduling around it if possible.

  9. Topical numbing creams are available with or without a prescription (examples: EMLA, Greencaine).

  10. Eating a meal just before treatment can reduce discomfort.

  11. Stay hydrated before, during, and after treatment. Dehydration makes follicles harder to treat and slows healing. Avoid alcohol the night before your appointment as it can dehydrate you.

Aftercare Instructions

  1. Do not touch or scratch the treated area to avoid bacteria transfer and breakouts.

  2. Moisturize the area daily with a gentle, unscented moisturizer between sessions.

  3. Avoid makeup for 24 hours on the treated area. Even washing with soap can irritate the skin.

  4. Avoid perfume or alcohol-based products. Use witch hazel if needed.

  5. Apply aloe vera or Vaseline the night after treatment to help skin heal faster. If irritation persists on day two, apply 1% hydrocortisone cream to reduce redness and swelling.

  6. Avoid sun exposure for 72 hours to prevent hyperpigmentation.

  7. Avoid swimming in chlorinated pools for 48 hours.

  8. If small scabs appear, do not scratch them off — let them fall naturally to avoid scarring. (They are dried lymph fluid.) Keep skin moisturized to reduce scabbing. For discomfort, use an Epsom salt compress (1 tsp salt in ½ cup warm water) for 10 minutes.

  9. Do not tweeze between sessions. You may clip or shave the hair if necessary.

  10. Some regrowth is normal. Schedule your next appointment when the first regrowth appears for more effective treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes unwanted hair growth?
Many things can contribute to excess hair growth including heredity, hormone levels, medications, temporary hair removal methods (like waxing, tweezing, and threading), and certain illnesses. It’s also common for women to experience increased hair growth during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause.

Are there different types of Electrolysis?
Yes. There are three main methods:

  • Galvanic – Uses direct current (DC) to create a chemical reaction that destroys the dermal papilla.

  • Thermolysis – Uses alternating current (AC) to generate heat in the follicle, cauterizing and destroying the papilla.

  • The Blend – Combines both currents in the same probe, speeding up the process.

All three methods are safe and effective. The choice of method is up to the professional electrologist.

Is Electrolysis safe?
Yes! Electrolysis has been used safely and effectively since 1875. All equipment is sterilized before each treatment, and a brand-new, sterile probe is used for every session to eliminate any risk of cross-contamination.

Does Electrolysis hurt?
Most clients describe the sensation as a “quick warmth” or a “slight sting.” Some areas are more sensitive than others, and you may notice more sensitivity at certain times of the month. Over-the-counter numbing creams are available, and taking a mild pain reliever 30 minutes before your appointment can reduce discomfort.

Are there side effects?
You may experience slight redness and/or swelling after treatment — this is normal and typically subsides within a few hours. Since treated follicles are open and more prone to bacteria, it’s best to keep the area clean and avoid makeup or harsh products for 24 hours after treatment.
